Harvesting and Stomping Grapes in Portugal’s Lovely Dão Wine Region

It’s fall here in Brazil, but it doesn’t feel like fall weather to me – so I’m reminiscing about our last fall in Portugal.

Our family spent a fabulous long weekend with friends at Quinta dos Três Rios, a bed and breakfast in the DãoCentro Portugal’s wine region. The hospitality of our Três Rios hosts, Hugh and Jane, was amazing; we felt like we were staying with old friends. The food was farm fresh and absolutely delicious and the beauty of the vineyards and surrounding countryside beckoned us outside even when it was raining. Since we were visiting during harvest season, we were put to work. Parents and kids, under the watchful supervision of the farm dogs, grabbed clippers and set to work filling large buckets with clusters of plump, ripe grapes. After we had harvested enough for the day, we kicked off our shoes and started stomping – so much fun!
