Walking in Botafogo and Parque do Flamengo

Although it doesn’t attract tourists like Rio’s more famous Zona Sul neighborhoods, this beautiful park area between Copacabana and Centro has wonderful views of Guanabara Bay and Pão de Açúcar, beaches (swimming not advised), nets for beach volleyball, courts for outdoor sports, and a walking/running/biking path that hugs the bay. I recently discovered this bayside area is also known as Aterro do Flamengo (Flemish Landfill) which makes perfect sense since the Brazilians took inspiration from the Dutch and claimed land from the sea to create this waterfront park back in the mid 1960s. Not only did this urban project give Cariocas a fabulous outdoor recreation space, but it also helped downtown traffic flow and held back periodic floods.

Come along on the walk my friend and I took yesterday – accompanying bossa nova music is Wave by Antônio Carlos Jobim.
